Calligraphy is “the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious, and skillful manner”.:18 The main tools are the brush and the pen. In Asia, calligraphy was a major influence in the arts, especially in ink drawings and wash paintings. This art became very popular in Japan and China, and at the end of the 19th century, it made its way into Europe. More recently, this influence extended to photography, as well. In nature, there are certain compositions based on shapes and patterns that sometimes resonate with ink and wash paintings.
